A Tribute to My Parents

This idea came up while I was watching an episode of 30 Days on Hulu.

The premise of the episode was that a mother was going to become a binge drinker for 30 days to show her oldest daughter what it can do to you. As I watched, I was amazed what this mother was willing to go through for her child. (No, it did not look fun)

After watching it I was thinking about my own parents and thinking about how truly awesome they are.

I'll start with my Mom, she was raped when she was 17 years old. She ended up pregnant with me as a result.

Rather than put me up for adoption or have an abortion she kept me, willingly and lovingly. She was shunned by most people where she lived, they did not believe her because she chose to keep me. Now she is a devoted Grandmother, it's so much fun to see her with my nieces and nephew. As we I've watched her work her way through school to get a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.

Then there's my Dad (not the sperm donor) and yes he is my Dad. He's been there since before I was born, he was there with me everyday while I was in the hospital after being born eight weeks early. If that doesn't make a person a Father/Dad, I don't know what does. Dad after long and hard work is probably (Yes, I'm a bit biased. But my theory has been confirmed by other people who know him and work with him.) the best damn Nurse that Logan Regional has. His specialty is working with infants in the NICU.

These two people provided a loving home for me growing up and still provide loving support now that I'm an adult. They taught me right from wrong, but also encouraged me to be my own person. They had/have hopes and dreams for me as any parent does, but they weren't forceful and have let me find my own way.

Now that I look back on life growing up I have no idea how my parents were able to push themselves the way they did. My mom working graveyards so my dad could go to school during the day and drive shuttle at night. Yet, I still remember spending a lot of time together as a family.

Needless to say, I haveĀ  a lot to live up to when I finally have a family of my own.

This is just a small way of saying thanks to them.

I love you Mom and Dad!
